Balthazar’s Independence Day brunch and pop-up

Balthazar 4th July Independence Day brunch - Bloody Mary

American celebrations come to Covent Garden for the 4th July Independence Day weekend.

It’s the ultimate all-American get-together. This weekend, the London outpost of New York restaurant Balthazar, will be celebrating American history by throwing one big weekend brunch party and taking its cuisine out onto the streets of Covent Garden in a mini American take-over.

Balthazar 4th July Independence Day brunch - hotdog

The restaurant will be serving up a couple of specials any American would be proud of. First there’s a super-sized gourmet hotdog with a home-made pain de mie roll wrapped around an 8” Toulouse sausage topped with Scotch beef brisket, home-made barbeque sauce, melted Comté cheese and crispy shallots. It’s a magnificent sight and even more glorious when devoured one meaty, cheesy and smoky bite at a time.

Balthazar 4th July Independence Day brunch - le sandwich americain

Then there’s “le sandwich américain”, an equally impressive open pain au lait sandwich with a flat steak hache patty topped with dill pickle, melted Cheddar and a spicy cocktail sauce. Every good burger comes accompanied by some fries, except this one comes fully formed with the fries on it. Now that’s efficient. The sandwich will also be available from a pop-up stall in the Covent Garden piazza for those who prefer to grab and go.

Expect Bloody Marys too and for those who can’t get enough, the gauntlet has been thrown for guzzling through a 12-litre “Balthazar” bottle of Bloody Mary – to share, obviously. Those curious about the ingredients can attempt their own with a recipe of rum, coke, palm sugar, sherry vinegar, onion, fennel, garlic, old spice, curry spice and coriander.

Don’t forget to finish off on a sweet note with Stars and Stripes chocolate cookies or Union vanilla macaroons (or both). Those dining on Sunday will have another treat in store with model-DJ Amber Le Bon playing a set at 3pm.

Whilst the revelry continues inside, passers-by across London, from Mayfair and Covent Garden to Chelsea and Shoreditch, should keep an eye out for New York-style yellow cabs whizzing about. There’s an opportunity to join the festivities and win a brunch for four – simply capture the cabs on Instagram and tag the restaurant to be in with a chance of enjoying the feast.

The 4th July brunch is available from 10am – 4pm on 4th and 5th July. To book, call 020 3301 1155. Balthazar, 4-6 Russell Street, London WC2B 5HZ.

The pop-up is open from 11am – 8pm until 5th July in the Covent Garden piazza.
