Mission: Possible – interior design shopping at your fingertips

Maison Moschino, Milan. Just one of the many hotels you can ‘shop’ at

If you have ever stayed at a hotel or dined in a restaurant and fallen in love with a quirky chair or a statement light fixture, you needn’t scour the earth to track it down yourself, there is an online service that will do it all for you.

Created by Isabel Rutland, Discover & Deliver, allows you to ‘shop’ the very pieces you’ve seen in some of the world’s best design hotels and restaurants yourself, from Claridge’s in London to the Mondrian Soho in New York to The Water House in Shanghai. ‘These hotels are like the catwalks for the furniture industry,’ says Rutland.

The concept was born after the realisation that much of Rutland’s inspiration when trying to furnish her own home (on a budget), came from some of the hotels she had stayed in herself. ‘Being able to bring in accents of design enables people who can’t afford a whole sweep of interior changes, to get a step closer to the design they would want in an ideal world. It is about being inspired by the design of the locations you go to and using key pieces in the decoration of your home, which simply accents the living space with the ‘feel’ of somewhere you have visited.’

The website also provides information on the designers and manufacturers involved in the pieces they sell, ‘People love to invest in the provenance and story behind a piece.’ But if you can’t find what you’re after, the company welcomes requests for them to source it and makes it available for you to buy. It can be a challenge and they do well with it but their skills do stop short of daylight robbery. ‘We once received a request for a painting featured in the film The Thomas Crown Affair. We had to politely point out to the client that this was a very famous painting that belonged to a gallery!’

William Sofield, Kim Lantern, £1,289

A haven for the design-conscious, the company now works with over 100 hotels, bars and restaurants in over 20 destinations globally and in excess of 100 designers and manufacturers. They are constantly looking to add new locations to their portfolio and have recently started collaborating with private chalets in Verbier, Zermatt and St Moritz, so you are in for a treat. Never has it been easier to bring great design into your own home.
